Adult Protective Services

Morris County's Adult Protective Services helps those over 18 who cannot act on their own behalf and are at risk of exploitation, negligence and abuse.

These are defined by:

  • Abuse: the willful infliction of physical pain, injury, or mental anguish, unreasonable confinement, or the willful deprivation of services which are necessary to maintain a person's physical and mental health
  • Sexual abuse: any sexual activity where the vulnerable adult does not consent or is incapable of resisting or declining consent due to disability or fear of retribution or hardship
  • Neglect: an act or failure to act by a vulnerable adult by his or her caretaker which results in the inadequate provision of care or services necessary to maintain physical and mental health of the vulnerable adult and which can result in a situation in which the vulnerable adult is at risk of serious life threatening injury.
  • Exploitation: the act or process or illegally or improperly using the person or resources of a vulnerable adult, for another person's profit or advantage.

We provide 24 hour technical assistance to community agencies and performed 2,398 hours of social work for 35 clients in 2006.

Remember, clients who simply make unwise choices may not be vulnerable. Please call us at 973-326-7282 for assistance.
