Custody

Juvenile Detention Officers

The Custody component is responsible for the safety and security of the residents.

Specialized Units include:

  • Fire Prevention
  • Suicide Prevention
  • Gang Unit

The staff includes 23 Juvenile Detention Officers, 6 Senior JDO's and 3 Supervising JDO's. The custody personnel are fully capable of staffing the three housing units on a 24/7 basis.

Every Juvenile Detention Officer must complete a forty hour in house training program and five weeks of field training prior to working a post. They also must complete a minimum six week JDO Academy sanctioned by the Police Training Commission within the first year of employment. In addition, Juvenile Detention Officers are required to attend twenty-four hours of in-service training per year.

Resident Responsibilities

Every resident is required to understand the operations of the Detention Center and to know what is expected of them during their stay. Every resident is required to read and sign the Resident Handbook.

Gang Prevention

The Phoenix Curriculum is a Gang Prevention, Intervention, and Resistance program designed for elementary, middle school and high school students. Detailed lesson plans and classroom support materials are included, and the curriculum is linked to state core competency standards.
